Dhyan Chand was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He belonged to the Rajput family. His father's name was Rameshwar Singh, who served as a Subedar in the British Indian Army, also used to play a hockey game. Dhyan Chand had two brothers, Mool Singh and Roop Singh. Roop Singh also used to play hockey like Dhyan Chand, who was a good player.

Dhyan Chand Hockey Career
In his youth, Dhyan Chand was not at all fond of hockey, he loved wrestling. He started playing hockey with friends around him, who used to make hockey sticks from tree branches and used to make balls from old clothes. At the age of 14, he went with his father to watch a hockey match, where a team was losing by 2 goals. Dhyan Chand told his father that he wanted to play for this losing team. It was an army match, so his father allowed Dhyan Chand to play. Dhyan Chand scored 4 goals in that match. The army officers were very happy to see his attitude and confidence and asked him to join the army.
In 1922, at the age of 16, Dhyan Chand became a soldier from the Punjab Regiment. After joining the army, Dhyan Chand started playing hockey well, and he started liking it. Subedar Major Bhole Tiwari, who was from the Brahmin Regiment, became Dhyan Chand's mentor in the army and gave him basic knowledge about the game. Pankaj Gupta was called Dhyan Chand's first coach, he had said after seeing Dhyan Chand's game that one day it would shine like a moon in the whole world. He was named Dhyanchand Chand, after which his close friends started calling him by this name. After this Dhyan Singh became Dhyan Chand.
Dhyan Chand Sports Career
There were many aspects of Dhyan Chand's game, where his talent was seen. In a match his team was losing by 2 goals, Dhyan Chand had won the team by hitting 3 goals in the last 4 minutes. This Punjab tournament match took place in Jhelum. It was only after this that Dhyan Chand was called the Hokey Wizard. Dhyan Chand played the first National Hockey Tournament game in 1925. Vij, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bengal, Rajputana, and Central India took part in this match. Only after seeing his performance in this tournament, he was selected for the International Hockey team of India.
Dhyan Chand International Career Match
In 1926, Dhyan Chand was selected for a tournament to be held in New Zealand. During a match here, the Indian team had scored 20 goals, out of which 10 were taken by Dhyan Chand. India played 21 matches in this tournament, out of which 18 were won, 1 was lost and 2 were drawn. The Indian team scored 192 goals in the entire tournament, out of which Dhyan Chand scored 100 goals. After returning from here, Dhyanchand was made Lance Naik in the army. India scored 72 goals in 10 matches at the London Folkestone Festival in 1927, out of which Dhyan Chand scored 36 goals.
In the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games, the final match of the Indian team was with the Netherlands, in which Dhyan Chand scored 2 out of 3 goals, and won India its first gold medal. In 1932, India's final match at the Los Angeles Olympic Games was with the US, in which India scored a record-breaking 23 goals, and won the gold medal by winning 23–1. This world record was broken after many years in 2003. Out of those 23 goals, 8 goals were scored by Dhyan Chand. In this event, Dhyan Chand scored 12 goals in 2 matches.
In the 1932 Berlin Olympics, three consecutive teams defeated Hungary, America, and Japan with zero goals. In the semi-finals of this event, India defeated France by 10 goals, after which the final was with Germany. In this final match, only 1 goal came into India's account till the interval. In the interval, Dhyan Chand took off his shoes and played the game barefoot, in which India won 8–1 and got the gold medal.
Seeing Dhyanchand's talent, the great Hitler of Germany had offered Dhyan Chand a high post in the German Army, but Dhyan Chand was very much in love with India, and he politely declined the offer.
Dhyan Chand continued to play international hockey till 1948, after which he took retirement at the age of 42. Even after this, Dhyan Chand continued to play hockey matches in the army. Till 1956, he held the hockey stick in his hands.
Dhyan Chand Death Cause
Dhyan Chand's last days were not good. Despite getting India a gold medal in the Olympic match, the country of India forgot him. In his last days, he was also short of money. He was diagnosed with liver cancer, he was admitted to the general ward of AIIMS Hospital in Delhi. He died on 3 December 1979.
