Summary
We are looking for someone passionate about data dissemination through IT. The associate will support air quality application design and development and work on data visualization and linking open source air pollution data to Air Quality Dashboards managed by ICIMOD and its Regional Member Countries.
The applicant must be results driven and motivated to make a difference. You will be based in Kathmandu, Nepal, and working in a cross-cultural, impact-oriented environment. About ICIMOD
We are ICIMOD – a unique regional intergovernmental learning and knowledge center based in Nepal. We work on behalf of the people of the HKH and our eight Regional Member Countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan.
We aim to influence policy and practices to help the governments and communities of the HKH meet the region’s complex and increasing climate and environmental challenges while encouraging regional cooperation and collaboration for more sustainable mountain development.
We are currently in the last year of our Medium-Term Action Plan (MTAP-IV) programming period (2018–2022). Given rapidly changing development scenarios, we have recently formulated a new Strategy 2030: Moving Mountains, where we have committed to helping build a greener, more inclusive, climate-resilient HKH and are eager to engage talented new colleagues from across the region and the world.
Responsibilities and task
The associate will largely work under the Regional Programme on Atmosphere. Under the direct supervision of the Water and Air Theme Leader and the general guidance of the Atmosphere Regional Programme Manager, the Air Quality Application Development Associate will fulfill the following duties and responsibilities:
Help set up, maintain, and upgrade the hardware and software of the air quality dashboard and allied systems
Conduct geospatial analysis and transformation of air quality stations, models, and other spatial data
Conduct geospatial allocation of emissions data and create model-ready emissions inventory
Carry out the air quality and emission data visualization and public (web, intranet, mobile app) dissemination of observations and model data using user-friendly applications
Build services in the THREDDS server catalog and enable WMS services
Visualize new data to display data extent and parameters available
Develop API for new data for partners
Develop manuals for air quality applications such as the Air Quality Dashboard
Support capacity-building training related to air quality apps developed by ICIMOD and engage in outreach activities
Work as a team player within ICIMOD to support other activities and promote institutional goals
Minimum Qualifications
A postgraduate degree in a relevant field of study (GIS, geomatics engineering, environmental engineering, computer engineering/applications) with at least one year of relevant work experience is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted instead of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of three years of demonstrated experience using GIS tools including scripting
A minimum of three years of demonstrated experience with Python, Fortran or C, or other such programming languages
Experience working with large observation datasets such as NetCDF and HDF
Experience working in Unix/Linux environments
Some experience in TETHYS, THREDDS servers
Some experience in web, intranet, or mobile application development
