Tenzin Gyatso was born on 6 July 1935 in a small village in the Taktsar region of north-eastern Tibet, into a family of farmers and horse traders. Taktsar was located in Qinghai, a Chinese province at the time of Tenzin Gyatso's birth. At that time the chieftain of Qinghai province was Ma Lin, who was appointed by the governor Kumimang.
Tenzin Gyatso's childhood name was Lhamon Dhoddup.
